“This Flesh is Mine” – 2014 Experimental Theatre. (Border Crossings (London), in association with ASHTAR Theatre (Palestine)) Achilles, the greatest of the Achaean warriors, refuses to fight; angered that King Agamemnon has stolen his captive slave-girl, Briseis. “She shares my tent, she shares my bed. Her flesh is mine.” But Briseis has dreams and desires of her own. Produced in collaboration with Ashtar Theatre from Palestine, Brian Woollandʼs taut and poetic play for Border Crossings brings together Homerʼs Troy and the Middle East of today: worlds shaken by cycles of violence and revenge, by ambition and self-interest masquerading as idealism; worlds struggling towards any possibility of reconciliation. First presented in Ramallah in 2014, and then at LondonʼsTestbed 1, This Flesh is Mine brings together Homerʼs Troy and the contemporary Middle East in an extraordinarily intense and powerful piece of total theatre. Designed for presentation in a range of venues, the production leads the audience between different spaces, immersing them in the experience of war.
