“Abu Shaker’s Affairs 97" is the initial forum theatre production
by ASHTAR and the first in the West Bank as well, as this type of
theatre was still uncommon although it is the most lively and
suitable type under our current social and political conditions. It
strengthens the ties with society and provides a wide horizon of
expression for all that could not have been discussed, in a civilized
manner that ensures respect for views and counter views.
Abu Shaker is a dominant character who only cares for himself
and does not think that others have the right to decide their
own destinies but gives himself the right to deal with them as he
pleases... His primary principle in life is “the means justifies the
end.” The absence of family democracy, cultural confusion of
the youth and the denial of higher education and choice of a
life partner for women, were issues raised.
