ASHTAR will expose audiences to the "Legislative Theatre", a technique developed by Augusto Boal, father of Theatre of the Oppressed. This type of theatre will enable society to take an active role in making their views reach the authorities and the legislators.
The main aim of the Legislative/Forum production is to awaken the attitude of legislators, decision makers, women, youth, social activists and legal rights defenders to the existing injustices and need for a democratic social order in the nascent Palestinian State. The production discusses laws dealing with household violence, honor killing (murder of females for having allegedly soiled the family honor) and highlights women's rights. The main activities evolve around five main phases:
a. Preliminary Research;
b. Themes choice study, workshop and production;
c. local tour of the play (60 performances);
d. Formulation of suggestions and submission to the Legislative Council;
e. Forum Theatre Workshop with local organizations .
Therefore, ASHTAR, will stimulate the audience to come up at the end of each performance with suggestions for reform of existing laws and orders that would eventually be consolidated and presented to the decision makers. This step will bring to the attention of the authorities, the legislators and the media that there exists some humanitarian problem(s) that require(s) their immediate attention.
